Fresh Outta the Studio
REVOLUTION (a working title)
So happy to share my current work. This series of work was spurred by a perfect storm of events. For a few years I have felt this draw to bring several aspects of my work together, but couldn’t quite see the way. When the salon approached me to create new paintings for space, it ignited excitement and I couldn’t wait to sketch and brainstorm.
Soon after my husband and I got to get away for a weekend, without kids, in a quiet cabin where the WIFI wasn’t working. It gave me the opportunity to really play with ideas, and sketch endlessly and it all just came together so effortlessly. As if this was exactly the work I was meant to make and it couldn’t wait. I got right back to the studio and it was like magic.
There were happiness and joy and I feel like that energy comes through in the paintings. This is what I dub the equivalent to a runner’s high when the creating just flows out of you, and it’s effortless. There becomes an easy dialogue between the work and the artist. I so enjoyed working larger as well. When I scale up the conversation between the surface of the work and myself begins to involve the physicality of painting too.
As soon as I installed the work it made the space exactly how I wanted it. It amazes me how the energy seemed to be transferred to the space itself. As I continue to explore this direction in the studio I am drawing on the large number of sketches that I created that one weekend and I continue to enjoy working ideas out on my iPad.
The houses have broken apart and deconstructed. The form is brighter and bolder. Some of the work has totally abstracted and the house form becomes lost in the movement of the brush strokes. I’ve introduced pastel, oil pastel, colored pencils, and graphite. Which allows me to bring gestural marks, more linear compositions. The depth and contrast allow me to really create a special situation.
Stay tuned as I hope to bring newer work together for a show! You can view all finished work by clicking the link below. If you want to see weekly progress in my studio follow along on Instagram.
